              JPNIC Information Serviceの概要、運用方針
                 

1. 概要

略称：  IS WG
英名：  Information service working group
和名：  情報サービス作業部会

役割：JPNIC会則第2条、第3条で定められた情報提供業務を行なう。登録管理業務の
基礎となるデータおよび利用者のための案内、申請書式など、他のWGで用意
されるものを見やすく整理する他、JPNIC会員の行なう情報サービスの案内、
さらに独自の情報を用意し、コンピュータネットワークの発展のために有益か
つ楽しい情報サービスを展開することを目標とする。他国NICの情報サービスと
の連携、外国からの一般利用者のアクセスも考慮し、可能な限り英文資料も蓄
積する。

3. 基本方針

・さまざまなサービスの統合、できるだけ管理を楽にする。
        (特に、ftp, gopher系(プレインテキスト)とWWW(HTML)の統合した管理、
         片方だけ更新されたなどということがないように)

・JPNICのホストのデータにおくものは基本的にはJPNICで作成した情報と
  rfcなどネットワーク運営管理に必要な情報およびそれらを加工したもの。
  (JPNICドキュメントに加え、運営委員会の紹介など利用者にJPNICの活動を
   広報し親近感を持ってもらえるような部分もほしい)

・WWW/Gopherの特性を活かし、JPNIC会員の情報サービスへのポインタと
  ネットワーク運営管理に役立つ情報へのポインタを整理する。

・海外NICのサービスの状況を把握、必要ならコンタクトをとって連携に努める。

・海外の利用者の便宜、広報的意味合いから、英文資料の充実をはかる。JPNIC
  のドキュメントは基本的には、事務局から外注、各WGで修正されたものが
  用意されることになっている。

・利用統計情報の充実。

・体系化されたサービスを心がけつつできるだけ楽になるように工夫する。

・whoisなどJPNICの基本的な運用に関わるデータベースでありその運用はdb-wg
  に任せる。ISでは、Gopher/WWW/mailserverからのゲートウェイ、他と合わせ
  てwhoisの利用統計情報を提供する。

・X.500(Glenn)チームは、Information serviceに入ってもらうが技術的なこと
  はそのまま任せる。ISでは、それらへのGopher/Mosaic/mail serverでの
  ゲートウェイを提供する。

・堅苦しい情報だけでなく、楽しい情報も用意したい。

4. 利用可能なホスト

5. 各サービスについての現状

1) FTP, mirror (ftp(ns).nic.ad.jp)

    誰かに任せて体系的にやって欲しい。
    各会員情報はまあいいでしょう。事務局もやってくれるし。
    問題は mirror です。NIC 関係の重要な情報は mirror して、
    ちゃんとアナウンスしたい。（現状では、聞かれた人にだけ、
    mirror していることを言っている状態）。常にディスクはぎりぎり。

2) Mail server (sh.nic.ad.jp)

    誰かに任せて体系的にやって欲しい。ソフトは自作。本当は頑張って
    NIC 標準仕様を作るべきだろうがね。mirror との関係で、mirror の体
    制が確立していないので、メイルサーバで rfc とかも取れるけど、ド
    キュメントには書いていない。INDEX ファイルを分割しなきゃならん。
    ファイルサイズが入っていないので大きなファイルを取ると困る。
   （ニフティから良く溢れた通知が沢山返ってくる）送るのを encode 
    したり archive したりして送る version を手掛けたが完成に至らず。
    info@xx.nic.ad.jp の自動応答も、このサービスを利用している。
    常に監視する必要がある。(by 平原さん)

3) X.500 (on tau.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jpとwnoc-snd-ss2.wide.ad.jp? その関係は?)

    6月末を目標にレポートを作成中。そろそろ公開可能。
     --> Glennより報告あり(別紙)。
    現在wnoc-snd-ss2で約200MBを使用。アクセス方法は2つあり、
    X.500のプロトコル(クライアントのこと)、または
    Lightweight Directory Access Protocol[LDAP](daemonがwnoc-snd-ss2で稼働)。
    改造fingerdで問い合わせを受ける技術もできている。(by Glenn)
    www.ntt.jpでX.500ゲートウェイが稼働している。
       (gotoがたまたま発見した。どなたのお仕事ですか?)

4) WWW Server (on rs.nic.ad.jp -> zeus.nic.ad.jp )

    小島さん(root)と坂本さんがdaemon(NCSA httpd)基本設定を完了。
    www.nic.ad.jpとしてDNS登録
    --> rs.nic.ad.jpからzeus.nic.ad.jp(192.41.192.5)(新たにレンタル開始)
    へ移行、www.nic.ad.jpとして登録(小島さん)、html作成中。

5) Gopher server (on gopher(ns).nic.ad.jp(192.41.192.1))

       誰かに任せて体系的にやって欲しい。(by 高田さん)

    www-managers@iij.ad.jp, gopher-sites@ncc.go.jpでJPNICのサーバ運用に
    関して留意する点、期待するものについて、管理者の意見を聞いた結果、

    i) 英語documentと日本語documentの切替えをよく考えて下さい。(白橋さん@東大)
   ii) 日本のHome-pageとして、以下の階層を設けることを提案(釜江先生: JPNIC理事)
      a) 今あるsensitive mapの発展。地域毎の詳細なマップが
         下の層に続くようにする。
      b) 「学術分野別」のdirectory。文部省の科学研究費の分類表を
         ベースにして，英文の分野名も付けたものがある。
      c) ドメインと「行政区分別」のdirectory。大学と研究機関，民間は
         業種別（経団連あるいは通産省などに原案にできるものがあるで
         しょう），国では科学技術白書から取った表（特殊法人を含んでいる。
         送ります），公益法人（どう分類してよいか判らない）に分ければよ
         い。

    がありましたが、そこまでできるか、やるかは今後考えます。

6) 統計情報

   whoisの利用状況、メイルサーバの利用状況は運営委員会で毎回報告
   されている。生のlogはgopherd、httpdでもテキストで出力されるので、
   それらをcut/sort/uniqあるいはperlスクリプト等で編集すればなんとか
   なるのではないか。

6. 短期の具体的作業

 ・作業分担を決める。

 ・InterRopまでにある程度格好つけたい。(特にWWW)
     --> 既存の情報(ftp/GopherなどのへのURL)、サービスへのリンク
         JPNIC会員の提供するサービスへのリンク
         JPNIC理事会、運営委員会、WGスタッフの紹介
         (運営委員会で写真をとるとか、既存の個人URLへのポインタ)

 ・必要な人はJPNICの運用ホストにアカウントを作成する。その人たちは
   データディレクトリに書き込み権限(groupでのpermission)を持つ。

 ・daemon類の管理のためなど、root作業をやる必要があれば、そうできる
   ように依頼するが、限られた人とする。

 ・データの編集、翻訳等のみを行う人はとりあえずはJPNICホストのアカウント
   はなしで始めるが、あるていど時間がたったら直接書き込んでもらう形に
   移行する。

 ・Gopher/WWWサーバでは下書きを入れるためのディレクトリがあり、編集担当者
   のみが覗ける形になっているとうれしい。

          onto the above.

          near future plan: Redirect all change forms to X500-apply@wnoc-snd-ss2.wide.ad.jp
                            for updates. [Change forms = addition/modifications/deletions]

    Apart from X.500 DAP access to the directory there is 

        o a finger service to the directory at
                wnoc-snd-ss2.wide.ad.jp
        o a mail service at 
                x500-query@wnoc-snd-ss2.wide.ad.jp
        o an LDAP service offered to the directory from
                wnoc-snd-ss2.wide.ad.jp 
          for those who have LDAP clients [e.g. MaX500, ..]

How to use the JPNIC experimental X.500 finger Query Service
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        finger <key>@wnoc-snd-ss2.wide.ad.jp

Where <key> may be a <name>, whoisID, telephone number, ..

The <name> can be a person's full name, last name, or uniqname.  An 
search for exact matches is first tried; if there are no exact matches, 
an approximate search (using soundex rules) is done.

If your query matches exactly one person, you will receive detailed
information about that person.  If more than one is matched, a list 
will be returned giving summary details [Full name, whoisID, email] 
of each match this should hopefully provide you with enough informa-
tion to be able to determine which individual you really want.
Another query can then be made to obtain the detailed information.

How to use the JPNIC experimental X.500 Email Query Service
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By sending electronic mail to the address:

        x500-query@wnoc-snd-ss2.wide.ad.jp

you can access the JPNIC X.500 Directory.  The Directory contains
information about all persons registered at the NIC. 
including phone numbers, mailing addresses, email
addresses, and more.

To query the service, send a piece of email to this address with a
command similar to:

        find <name>

        e.g. find robert jones

somewhere in the Subject: field or anywhere in the body (text) of the
message.  You will receive a reply that contains information about the
target of your query (in the above example, you would get information
on all "robert jones" who are registered at JPNIC).  The <name> can be
a person's full name, last name, or uniqname.  An search for exact
matches is first tried; if there are no exact matches, an approximate
search (using soundex rules) is done.

If your query matches exactly one person, you will receive detailed
information about that person.  If more than one is matched, a list will
be returned that should hopefully provide you with enough information
to be able to determine which individual you really want.  Another
query can then be made to obtain the detailed information.

This service understands a number of synonyms for the "find" command,
including: "whois", "search", "look up", "show."  You can also send
a message with the word "help" in it to get this text returned to you.

Please note that this is an experimental service. Also,
note that this service is entirely automated -- no humans will respond
to requests or other email sent here.  If you have questions or
comments on the X.500 Directory service in general, or about this

How to use the JPNIC experimental LDAP service-
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        - there are several LDAP clients available in the public domain 

                o MaX500  for the Apple Macintosh
                o PiXie   IBM compatibles
 

Comments:
~~~~~~~~~

Do not expect very fast responses - NOW. However in a shortwhile - when
the GDA which is in its beta testing phase, becomes stable - you can 
expect responses as quick as the network permits!

Plans:
~~~~~~
There is a lot more work to be done here..  
        o expanding the information base to cover (almost) all users
          of the Japanese Internet
        o putting information about the Japanese Internet map
