From JPNIC
Dear Readers
As many of you will have already noticed, we have renewed the design, layout of the newsletter and some of the contents from this issue. Let us introduce the contents of this issue, including those that have been renewed.
・The cover pages, statistics and some other pages have become multi-colored. The first cover has and will have photographs which we took or selected for the articles of the issue.
・“Special Article 1” titled “From the Global Arena” features Hiroshi Esaki, a trustee, and Akinori Maemura and Izumi Okutani from the Secretariat, who are serving on the boards of the Internet Society, ICANN and APNIC, respectively. The article reveals how these three envisage the future of the Internet.
・“Special Article 2” covers a report on “Internet Week Showcase in Nagoya” held at Chukyo University on June 1 and 2. This event was a digested version of JPNIC’s “Internet Week” for those who had not participated in it so that they could understand the importance of basic Internet infrastructure technologies. Programs for this showcase were selected from among those that were particularly popular in “Internet Week 2016”. There were about 200 participants and more than 120 streaming viewers.
・“A Scene of Internet History”, which previously focused on behind-the-scene stories of groundbreaking events in the history of the Internet, has been renewed to “Prologue to the Internet: Its Technologies and Services”. In this new feature, the JP29-type-robot “Nikkun” and “Dr. Netson” of the Internet Institute introduce the beginning of the Internet and its technologies and services in a way that is even easy for teenagers to understand. Part 1 covers “the beginning of the Internet, and the beginning of the ARPANET”.
・For “Introducing JPNIC members”, we visited Densan. Co., Ltd., a system integrator based in Nagano Prefecture. This company was founded in March 1966 beginning with the development of a taxation process system for municipalities using mainframe computers. With their rich 51 year history, Densan provides services to the 10% of local governments all over Japan that employ its systems. It was quite impressive that they articulated about their overwhelming strength in services for local governments by taking full advantage of the know-how they have built up over many years to contribute to local governments all over Japan from Nagano.
・Please welcome the new feature of the “Internet loves you”. In every Issue we will focus on “a person” who is active in the Internet industry. This time, we introduce Chika Yoshimura of NTT America, Inc. who has served as Chairman of JANOG since September 2015.
・“Internet Terms in Ten Minutes” introduces the technologies of e-mail security and its needs. When considering e-mail security from the viewpoint of users, what kind of role does conventional security technology play to reduce risks and factors of unease? And what kind of issues are there in order to improve the user's safety? We outline e-mail security technology, the current issues and the way forward.
・“Internet Topics” and “JPNIC Activity Report” have now been reorganized into “IP Address Topics”, “Internet Governance Topics” and “Technical Trends”.
We have made our best efforts in renewing this newsletter in order to improve the readability of the existing pages and compose new pages to make it the best possible newsletter. We do hope this will be valuable to many readers. If you have any comments or feedback, feel free to contact jpnic-news@nic.ad.jp. Your comments are always welcome.
